St. David, AZ Area Guide

Home to the Holy Trinity Benedictine Monastery, this small town south of Benson, in Southern Arizona, was originally established by Mormon settlers in the 1800’s. Today, it’s still much the same quaint small town it was then a popular stop for visitors on their way to world famous Tombstone and Bisbee, Arizona.

History

St. Davis was established as a result of the Mormon Battalion’s earlier passing through the San Pedro River Valley in 1846. One of the founders, Philemon C. Merrill, was a member of that battalion and the Mormon settlers of 1877 were a part of the group was originally to settle Lehi, Arizona. Named after David W. Patten, an early apostle that was killed in 1838 Missouri, the earlier St. David settlers played an important role in establishing the surrounding settlements, such as Tombstone and Fort Huachua.
